Judith Hill - Jazz Café, London 21/10/2021

October 25, 2021 by David Vousden in Funk, Soul, Live Review

In the heart of London, Camden Town remains very much as it was when I first visited nearly forty years ago. On this particular late October evening, the numerous restaurants, coffee shops and pubs selling £6 pints of craft beer team with people while the many stores offering piercings, tattoos and a seemingly endless range of t-shirts are slowly pulling down their heavily graffitied shutters. Various attempts to gentrify, or at least tidy up the area, have been partially successful in recent years but to be honest, Camden has hardly changed, and whispered offers to partake of a plant-based pharmaceutical are still a feature of the crowded street experience. Luckily, unlike central London just down the road, Camden still has plenty of live music venues and this evening, I'm visiting an imposing former Barclays Bank building that has been the home of the Jazz Cafe since 1990. A staple of the Camden scene, Adele, Amy Winehouse and Bobby Womack head a long list of name artists to have played here and Judith Hill is joining that illustrious list on the sole UK date of her European tour.

Vega - The Underworld, London 09/10/21

October 12, 2021 by David Vousden in Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Live, Rock, Melodic Rock, AOR

As it had been eighteen months since my last, pre-pandemic, live gig, I jumped at the chance to check out melodic rockers Vega on their return to touring at London’s Underworld. Eighteen months seemed like a very long time until I realised Vega and I last crossed paths, in the live arena, ten long years ago (March 2011) at London’s (sorely missed) Borderline. Vega were newcomers in those days opening for Houston, an act coincidentally now also on the Frontiers label.

Ruston Kelly + Ferris & Sylvester - The Slaughtered Lamb, London 17/09/2018 (Live Review).

September 19, 2018 by David Vousden in Acoustic, Americana, Country, Folk, Live Review, Singer Songwriter

Singer-somgwriter Ruston Kelly is in London promoting his excellent debut album ‘Dying Star’ with a low key show at the bijou Slaughtered Lamb.  Needless to say the gig is sold-out and it’s pretty obvious the crowd are expecting good things long before Kelly ambles on stage.

Sam Baker - Dingwalls, London UK

November 12, 2014 by David Vousden in Country, folk, Live

‘Say Grace’ is one of those albums with the ability to creep up on you and worm its way into your subconscious, resulting in you returning to it on a regular basis, and each time it revels something new. With this in mind a trip to London for an intimate show at Dingwalls, hidden away in the bowels of Camden market, was high on my list of priorities.

Old Crow Medicine Show with Parker Millsap - The Roundhouse, London UK

October 27, 2014 by David Vousden in Country, Alt-Country, Bluegrass

The Roundhouse is best known for a period in the late 1960s when it played host to the likes of Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and the only UK show by The Doors. Dig a little deeper and the Grade II listed building that features a circular design, hence the name, has a very interesting history that dates back to 1847. The venue has been used for many ventures over the decades as initially it housed a railway turntable before it had a fifty year stretch as a storage facility for a Gin distillery. This sense of history, with its images of railways and alcohol consumption, feels like the perfect setting for tonight’s acts as both Parker Millsap and Old Crow Medicine Show draw on the past for their musical inspiration.

Police Dog Hogan with Lucas & King - Borderline, London UK

October 03, 2014 by David Vousden in folk, Country, Acoustic, Live

The Borderline in London is such a great little venue, tucked away in a backstreet in the shadow of the Centre Point tower and surrounded by the seemingly never-ending demolition / construction work. It is an oasis of calm and good music and the ideal location to launch ‘Westward Ho!’ the new album from Police Dog Hogan.
