Corey Nolen will release 'Not All Roses' on February 3rd 2018
The latest release from Birmingham, Alabama singer-songwriter Corey Nolen 'Not All Roses' is his fifth in five years. The prolific Nolen has enlisted the help of vocalist Ashley Spurling this time around, and the result is an album of harmony-driven country music with just a dash of pop. One listen to 'My Love' from the record and you'd have to have a heart of stone to not enjoy the smooth harmonies or appreciate the honesty on display here. We caught up with Corey Nolen for a quick chat about 'Doing Alright' the first track released from the album:
'Doing Alright' is the track Corey has chosen to promote 'Not All Roses' and we asked him for a little background on the song:
““Doing Alright” is a song about self awareness and self respect. In many ways it encourages an apathy towards others opinions or what the culture defines as correct, beautiful, or successful. I really wanted a song that championed individualism and could be an anthem for people being who they are and using the gifts they have (flaws included). There is also the irony of me being an entertainer and telling others what to think by trying to convince them to not listen to people like me. Haha. That’s what I like the most about it. It makes a strong positive statement without being too serious.”

The album was primarily recorded live in the studio. Corey enlisted the help of producer Brad Lyons (Matthew Mayfield) as well as a large cast of Birmingham and Nashville musicians including Clint Wells (Bob Schneider, Griffin House), and Jesse Suttle (Alabama Blues Hall of Fame). Together they were able to accomplish the goal of capturing the energy and dynamics of vocalists and musicians playing off of each other in the moment in order to create this unique and emotive full length album.
“Not All Roses” is the fifth recording released by Corey Nolen in the past five years. Though he is not a typical touring artist, Corey is a prolific writer and consistently brings new music to the stage and studio. He is best known for his songwriting, which draws from his keen attention to the details of life and his ability to capture truths shared by almost all of his listeners. In the winter of 2017 Corey was named a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition and in the spring of 2015 he was awarded first place in the statewide, “Make Music Alabama” songwriting competition. With this album, Corey Nolen further establishes himself as a compelling storyteller with a knack for bringing those stories to life by engaging skilful musicians who help him communicate his stories through well-produced, honest songs.
