Guitars, guitars and more guitars on The Blue Highways new single
The Blue Highways were looking to try something a little different for their second single release. The band wanted to celebrate guitar music and bring back the days when the guitar ruled the airwaves. The band had met plenty of great players on their travels so calls were placed and the result is ‘Play Johnny, Play’ a track that features seven of the best guitar players on the UK Americana scene. Jack Lury of The Blue Highways is joined by CJ Hillman, Henry Senior, Joe Hazell (Curse Of Lono), Lewis Fowler (Two Ways Home), Paul Lush and 12-string wiz Tony Poole. The single is out today (May 31st 2019) and streaming/purchase links follow along with a cool video and loads more about The Blue Highways:
The second single from up-and-coming Americana band The Blue Highways, “Play Johnny, Play” is just a little bit special. A thrilling celebration of guitar music evoking memories of a time when guitars ruled the airwaves, featuring not only the full band but an amazing array of six of the best guitarists from the UK’s Americana scene.
Since joining the scene the band have met, played alongside and got to know players from many of the leading bands but weren’t sure of the feasibility of arranging and organising all the players on one track. “We decided there was no harm in asking as the guitarists could just say no. The replies came in over a few days and it was Yes, yes, yes... in the end every single player we approached said they were up for it", says lead singer and songwriter Callum Lury.
The song 'Play Johnny, Play' takes up the story of a young man who cannot help but be drawn to the guitar and its virtues and vices. The track has a rock and roll backbone, powerful and aching vocals and space for each of the guitarists to weave in their own distinctive sound. Recorded and mixed by Chris Clarke at Reservoir Studios in London, the final mix has a rough, raw, live sound that perfectly suits the band.
