Christmas Music @RGM
I think we’d all agree that 2020 sucked in so many different ways. So with December now upon us and Christmas just around the corner, it’s time for some festive cheer. Nothing screams Christmas more than the Christmas song. Love ‘em or loath ‘em the Xmas ditty is guaranteed to bring seasonal cheer and a little positivity, so sit back and relax with your Eggnog or Babycham (do they still make Babycham?) as RGM takes you where other websites fear to tread with a selection of the best seasonal music for Christmas 2020.
First up, and getting our Christmas music selection off to a rockin’ start, we’ve legendary Twisted Sister singer Dee Snider. Dee originally wrote ‘The Magic Of Christmas Day’ for his wife, demonstrating that even Metal band frontmen can be as soppy as the rest of us. Celine Dion actually recorded the song for her smash hit album of Christmas songs, which must have been useful in helping Dee to keep logs on the fire at this time of year. Dee has teamed up with Lzzy Hale of Halestorm fame for what is a perfect take on the Metal Xmas song. Move over Slade, Dee and Lzzy are coming to town.
Next up we’ve Gina Naomi Baez a singer-songwriter, actress (Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It, Orange is the New Black) and YouTube influencer (a very 21st-century thing to have on your bio). Gina has released a new single ‘Christmas Candlelight’. “The holidays might feel dark and cancelled in a sense this year, and I hope this song reminds others of the importance of the season and what truly matters most” is Gina’s take on the song and you’d have to be a hard-hearted cynic to argue as ‘Christmas Candlelight’ is quite lovely.
The Blue Highways are another act entering into the Christmas spirit with ‘Won’t You Choose Love This Christmas’ which is available now on all the usual digital platforms (link below). The brothers Lury (Callum, Jack and Theo) are best known to the Americana community here in the UK but on ‘Won’t You Choose Love This Christmas’ they’ve embraced the feel of Christmas music and thrown in a little bit of Elton John. The resulting track is delivered with conviction by Callum over swirling keys that reaches a crescendo via impressive layered vocals.
Some folks are new at this Christmas songs idea but Sofia Talvik is an expert in the field. Sofia has been penning seasonal tunes for over a decade and her latest is a delicious slice of Nordic folk that expands on what you might expect from the Swedish songwriter. On ‘This Mess We’re In’ Sofia looks at the world in 2020 via what she calls “A doomsday Christmas song”. For more from Sofia follow this link to her latest EP featuring more Christmas songs:
And so we conclude this look at seasonal music for the 2020 holiday season. Will we be back with more festive musical offerings? The RGM inbox tells me it could well happen so please stay tuned.
